Mrithasanjeevani Mantra – For health, long life, and freedom from fear

Mrithasanjeevani is a herb that cures all diseases. In the Hindu epic, Ramayana, it was used to revive Lakshmana, who was struck down by Prince Indrajith’s poison-tipped arrows. It is a very important mantra of the Navanath Sampradaya (Sect of 9 saints and masters). It has to be recited 108 times. It is believed that doing so helps bring success in one’s ventures and good health. It is said that it can even bring a dead person back to life. This ancient mantra has many versions. Its origin can be traced back to Brahmarishi Shukracharya, who possessed Mritha Sanjeevani Vidya, or the knowledge on gaining immortality. It is a very powerful Vedic healing mantra. This is a Vedic hymn that is chanted during the ritual of sowing seeds when functions like upanayanams and weddings are held. The chant is believed to enhance the potency of herbs, etc. The word ‘oshadhi’ or ‘oushadhi’ also denotes ‘medicine’. So it is believed that the hymn has a healing effect on people, when chanted. It is also recited by those seeking ‘prayschitham’ or redemption from their sins.

Varuna Suktam – To invoke rain and justice

Varuna is a Vedic god associated with the sky, sea, rain, justice, and truth. He is the son of Sage Kashyapa, one among the seven ancient sages. This hymn or Suktam describes Varuna, who is regarded as the Rain God and is chanted during times of drought, in order to invoke rain. Also, among the gods, it is Varuna who is privy to all the actions of human beings, howsoever hidden and secretive they may be. He has the power to see deep into the recesses of the human heart. Varuna Suktam also invokes the retributive power of Varuna to punish the wicked, especially liars.
