Chapter 6 of Devi Mahatmyam describes how the demon, Shumbha, when told of Goddess Kalika’s response to his marriage proposal, becomes angry and sends his commander, Dhoomralochana, to capture her and bring her to him. But Kalika killed him in no time, and she as well as her mount, the lion, killed the rest of his army. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke Durga’s blessings and protection.

Chapter 5 of Devi Mahatmyam talks about how the demons, Chanda and Munda, after seeing Goddess Kalika, praise her beauty to their masters, the demons, Shumbha and Nishumba. Shumbha sends a demon called Sugreeva as his emissary to plead his suit with Kalika. But Kalika’s reply is that her suitor should win her in war, thereby taking away her pride and proving to be her equal in strength. It narrates the stories and exploits of Durga in her fight against the demons. Devotees chant these verses during Durga Pooja to invoke the Goddess’ blessings and protection.

The Devī Māhātmya comprises chapters 81-93 of the Mārkandeya Purana. It is one of the early Sanskrit Puranas. It is a collection of stories narrated by Sage Markandeya to Jaimini and his students (in the form of birds). The 13 chapters of Devi Māhātmya are divided into three episodes or charitas - Prathama charitha, Madhyama charitha, and Uthama charitha.. Each episode begins by invoking a different presiding goddess, though the text does not mention them. Devi Mahatmya has 3 main characters in the framing narrative - a dispossessed king, a merchant who is betrayed by his family, and a sage whose teachings lead the two men beyond existential suffering. The sage recounts three major battles between the Devi and various demons. The three stories feature Mahakali (Chapter 1), Mahalakshmi (Chapters 2-4), and Mahasaraswati (Chapters 5-13). Madhyama Charitham or the middle part is the second episode which describes the killing of the buffalo-headed demon, Mahishasura, and his armies.

Kavacham means ‘armor. ’ The Sloka describes the different names of the goddess, which are associated with different parts of the human body. Each name has its own quality and energy. It is customary to chant Chandi Kavacham during Navratri.
