Then referring to ‘Karm Sanyas, the renunciation of actions’ and ‘Karm Yog, action with devotion,’ Arjuna asked Krishna which was better. Though these are not different, and both lead to the supreme goal, Karm Yog is superior, declared Krishna.
Then Krishna elaborated-
“Neither desiring nor hating anything, the Karm Yogis are always in renunciation and can easily reach the Supreme. They are of pure intellect, have control over their minds and senses, and see unity in every soul. They perform all actions with complete detachment, don’t think of themselves as ‘doers,’ instead dedicate actions and their results to God, and thus remain unaffected by sin and attain eternal peace. Hence, neither being the doers nor the cause of anything, these detached beings live happily.
Divine knowledge bestows equality of vision that makes no differentiation within human beings and between humans and animals. Once it destroys ignorance that causes delusion, the Supreme reveals itself. Those absorbed fully in God and realize Him as the ultimate, neither rejoice with the pleasant nor grieve with the unpleasant, are relieved of their sins and rise to the level of ‘no-return.’ Unattached to the external sense pleasures, they also overcome the birth-death cycle in their life itself, and enjoy divine bliss. The sense objects give only misery, not pleasures, and only those who manage to check their desire and anger before death taste happiness.
Those relieved of sins, free of doubts, have disciplined minds, and are devoted to the welfare of all, are the liberated Yogis who attain God. Also, the self-realized who overcome anger and lust through constant practice, and subdue their mind, achieve freedom from material existence. Thus, the Yogis illuminated by the inner light, who experience the bliss of God within, get liberated and unite with the Supreme.
The sage frees himself of the thoughts of external enjoyment, fixes his gaze in the space between the eyebrows, equalizes the flow of inhaling and exhaling breath, thus controls senses, mind and intellect, and becomes free of desire and fear, is always in freedom.
And realizing Me as the Supreme Lord and the selfless friend of all the worlds and their beings, My devotees gain peace.”

Krishna told Arjuna that he taught the eternal science of Yoga to Sun God, and from him, it came down to Manu and Ikshvaku; but over time got lost to mankind. And being Krishna’s friend and devotee, he was revealing the same to Arjuna then.
But Krishna was born much after Sun God, and when Arjuna expressed his surprise over this, Krishna replied that both of them had many births, and while Arjuna forgot about these, Krishna remembered all of them. And Krishna continued-
“Whenever righteousness declines and unrighteousness increases, I manifest on earth age after age, to protect the virtuous, destroy the wicked, and establish Dharma again.
Those who understand my divine nature, become absorbed in me and are free of attachment, fear, and anger - are not born again but reach my eternal abode. Although I create people’s occupations, the eternal me remains a non-doer. Those who seek liberation knew this truth and performed their duties accordingly, and Arjuna, you, too, follow them.
The wise act without the desire for material pleasures. With no expectations or a sense of ownership and with mind and intellect under control, they don’t desire the fruits of actions and always remain satisfied. Thus though engaged in activities, they do nothing at all. With divine knowledge and no attachments, they do everything as the sacrifice to the Supreme, therefore incur no sin, and are freed of all Karmic reactions.
People offer a variety of things as a sacrifice, and these include Yogic practices, the study of scriptures, cultivation of knowledge, and regulation of breath and life energy. All these sacrifices culminate in knowledge and help cleanse impurities. People can learn this truth by endearing themselves to the enlightened saints.
And divine knowledge can reveal that all living things form part of the Supreme and are within Me. This knowledge can help even sinners to cross the ocean of material existence.
Divine knowledge is the great purifier. Prolonged Yoga practice grants mental purity; this can bestow divine knowledge in due course. Those with firm faith, and control of mind and senses, can get this divine knowledge and eternal peace.
So, Parth! Use the sword of knowledge to cut off the doubts in your heart, be firm on Karm Yog, stand up for righteousness, and fight!

On receiving this sane advice from Krishna, Arjuna now asked him to show the path that can lead him to the highest good.
“Knowledge and Action are the 2 paths to enlightenment,” declared Krishna and went on to highlight the significance of action in life.
“Action is an eternal requirement, necessitated by material nature. And those who control the mind and engage in detached action are the noble Karm Yogis. So, perform your duty as an oblation to the Supreme, without attachment to results; this can help attain the Supreme. Otherwise, work itself can cause bondage.
Performance of duties ordained by Vedas produce sacrifices; these cause rains, which contribute to food. The all-pervading Gods are satisfied by sacrifices, where they are always present and grant you life’s necessities. Hence consuming food that is first offered in sacrifice can relieve one of all sins.
Oh, Parth! I have no duty to perform or anything to gain; still, I am always engaged in my duties. But, if I cease to act, I will destroy peace in the entire human race. Those performing their duties with detachment inspire others to action and lead people on the right path.
While people perform activities by the 3 modes of material nature, ignorance identifies the soul with the body and regards itself as the doer. But the wise know that the soul is distinct from the Gunas like the senses and mind, and the Karmas; stay detached from the results of actions and thus escape from delusion.
So, perform your duties as offerings to Me, meditate on Me, the Supreme, and free yourself of desire and selfishness. Thus relieved of grief, oh Arjuna, fight! For it is better to die in discharge of one’s duty! Abiding by my teachings with faith can relieve one of Karmic bondage!
The lust born of passion that transforms later into anger, forces a person to commit sins, even unwillingly. Insatiable desire, bred by the senses, mind and intellect, burns like fire, clouds knowledge and deludes the soul. So, control the senses, and slay the sinful desire; otherwise, it can kill knowledge and realization.
The soul, the higher self, is supreme and is beyond the lower self like the body, senses, mind, and intellect. Overcome the lower self through the superior soul, and annihilate lust, the deadly enemy.”

Seeing Arjuna thus grief-stricken, Krishna chided him gently for giving in to emotions and delusion at the war front. But Arjuna asserted that he preferred renunciation and begging to fighting revered elders and relatives. Anxious and confused, he refused to fight and completely surrendered to Krishna for the right guidance.
The Krishna started to counsel the celebrated archer gently.
“Oh Arjuna, don’t grieve for the alive or dead. All of us existed all the time - past, present, and future. Just as a person passes through various stages of life from childhood to old age, after death, the soul passes from one body to another. Being aware of this is wisdom!
Only senses cause fleeting perceptions like joy and sorrow. Those not affected by such emotions and remain steady in both, attain liberation.
Only the body dies, but the soul embodied in it cannot be destroyed. The soul is neither born nor dies and always remains. Immeasurable, eternal, immortal, and unaffected, it neither kills nor gets killed. As a person sheds worn-out clothes and wears new ones, on death, the invisible and inconceivable soul casts off its old body and accepts a new one.
No one born can escape death, and all who die are reborn. This birth-death cycle is constant, so do not grieve for the body.
The warrior’s sacred duty is to fight for upholding righteousness; while those who discharge this duty can reach celestial abode, its refusal will be a dishonorable sin. If you win this war, you will enjoy the kingdom on earth, but if killed, you will ascend to heaven. So, Oh Arjuna! Do your duty and fight the war, not bothering about victory or defeat, joy or sorrow.
Working with understanding, rise to the level of pure consciousness; this can relieve you of your Karmic bondage. But you have a right only on your duty, not on the fruits of actions, which bind you to birth and death. So, perform your duty, leaving all attachments to results. Attachments gradually lead to ruin, so the one free of these and remains undisturbed amidst a host of emotions remains the sage of steady wisdom. And the one who withdraws senses from sensory objects attains divine wisdom and God’s grace. And free of sorrow, one gets peace. Thus established in consciousness and enlightened, one gets liberated and reaches God’s abode.”

With the massive Kaurava and Pandava armies standing in formation against each other in the Kurukshetra battlefield, ready to launch an attack and start the war, Arjuna told his charioteer Krishna to take his chariot to the middle of the armies so that he could see clearly the warriors raring to go.
Thus positioning himself at a vantage point between the 2 armies, what Arjuna saw before him made him dumb. Right in front, among his opponents, stood Bheeshma, the highly revered family elder, and Drona, the teacher dearest to him. Then he saw in both armies his relatives like grandfathers, uncles, brothers, cousins, nephews, sons, teachers, friends, and well-wishers all set to combat and kill one another. The very sight overwhelmed Arjuna with compassion, distress and sorrow, and he started sharing his deep emotions with his friend Krishna.
“Seeing my own people arrayed against each other in this bloody war, I am losing my physical stability and mental balance; my mind is thoroughly confused, and I cannot hold even Gaandeev, my bow in hand. I see only misfortune and no good in killing the near and dear!
I don’t desire victory, kingdom, power, pleasures, and joy at the cost of people like these. What I get by slaying them cannot be pleasure but only sin. And having known that killing is a crime, should I commit this sin at all?
This terrible war can destroy an entire dynasty and wipe out traditions. Then the families may give into vices; women can turn immoral and give birth to unwanted progenies, ruining all virtues and destroying the quality of life. And those who cause this are sure to get hell.
Instead of committing this horrendous sin, I prefer to stand unarmed and get killed on this battlefield.”
Devastated thus by anguish and grief, Arjuna threw away his bow and arrows and sat on the chariot itself in despair.
